Description: EtherScan is a block explorer for the Ethereum blockchain. It allows users to check on any accounts, contracts and transactions (with TX id) on the Ethereum blockchain.
EtherScan is a block explorer for the Ethereum blockchain. A block explorer is a program or website that allows users to search and navigate a blockchain, specifically the data contained within the blocks.
List of Functions
A non-exhaustive list of functions of EtherScan is as shown below:
- Checking account/contract balances
- Tracking account/contract transfer histories
- Tracking the status of transaction (with Tx ID)
- Monitoring the network hash rate and other statistics (more below)
- Useful APIs to track the status of the network
- Using EtherScan to broadcast transactions
EtherScan has integrated the functionality of easy viewing of the tokens balances within each “account” page. The figure above shows the DGD token holdings of one “randomly-chosen” address. Currently, EtherScan only support the easy viewing of common, popular tokens. For the less popular ones, you will have to view it on their ERC-20 token explorer.
EtherScan also provides useful and interesting statistics on the Ethereum blockchain. One example is the growth in unique addresses over time, as shown in figure above.
EtherScan offers free API functionality (available here) to unregistered users (with lower limits of 5 requests/sec) and registered users. EasyEth uses EtherScan APIs to provide the Ether stats in the sidebar.
