The MD5 algorithm is a widely used hash function that is used to produce a 128-bit hash value. Although MD5 was initially designed to be used as a cryptographic hash function, it has been found to suffer from extensive vulnerabilities. Hence, it is now only used as a checksum to verify data integrity.
Step 1: Download a MD5 checksum program
You can download a freeware – WinMD5Free from here. After unpacking the .zip file, you should see an .exe file. Double-click on the file and you should see the following:
Step 2: Verify the MD5 checksum
Recall that in “How To Install Parity In Windows“, we have downloaded the Parity windows installer. The EthCore developers have included the MD5 checksum for the installer, as shown below.
Now, let’s verify the Md5 checksum by using the installer. Select the file and click on “Verify”. You should see the following screen:
The MD5 checksum is correct and you can be sure that the file is not corrupted. 🙂
